Local Artists’ Galleries Unveiled at The Classic Center

ATHENS, GA– October 10, 2024—The Classic Center will showcase a vibrant new collection of galleries featuring artwork from local artists. In collaboration with The Classic Center Cultural Foundation, these exhibits will be launched to the public on October 17, 2024, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. as part of Athens’ Third Thursday event.

The new exhibits celebrate Georgia’s rich cultural heritage through the arts:

Classic Gallery I: “Legendary Georgia Musicians in Watercolor” by Jackie Dorsey –a stunning collection capturing iconic Georgia musicians through dynamic watercolor paintings.

Classic Gallery II: "Linnentown Then and Now: The Johnsons” by Caroline Ford Coleman – a series that highlights the historic Linnentown community and its significance in Athens’ history.

“We’re excited to launch these new galleries,” said Stephanie VanDyck, Director of the Cultural Foundation. “The Cultural Foundation is committed to providing resources that entertain and educate the community through the arts. Classic Galleries will not only celebrate the remarkable talent of our artists but also invite our visitors to experience their work firsthand.”

Third Thursday is a collective effort of local organizations around Athens to make art accessible to the public while highlighting and encouraging local talent. Classic Galleries at The Classic Center will be open for free public viewing during the Third Thursday event; reservations are not required. These galleries represent the future of new cultural exhibits coming to The Classic Center’s campus and Akins Ford Arena through the Georgia Music Collection from the University of Georgia Libraries and the Athens Clarke County Center for Racial Justice and Black Futures.

Artwork throughout the Classic Galleries is available for purchase. Visit ClassicCenter.com/ClassicGalleries for more information.
