Dr. Roop Dutta to Join Oconee Heart and Vascular Center

Athens, Ga. – Dr. Roop Dutta, a board-certified specialist in cardiac electrophysiology, is joining St. Mary’s Medical Group and Oconee Heart and Vascular Center (OHVC), effective Sept. 8, 2025. In partnership with longtime OHVC electrophysiologist Dr. Amit Shah, he will expand the electrophysiology services of OHVC and St. Mary’s Hospital.

Cardiac electrophysiology – known as “EP” – is a specialty that focuses on diagnosing and treating abnormal heart rhythms. Electrophysiologists study the electrical impulses that power the heart. They also implant high-tech cardiac devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators and provide long term follow-up care for patients.

EP procedures use minimally invasive catheter technology to treat heart rhythm disorders with minimal pain, blood loss, length of stay and recovery time.

Dr. Dutta comes to St. Mary’s from Boston University Brighton, part of the Boston University School of Medicine, where he recently completed his clinical cardiac electrophysiology fellowship. He earned his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Williams College, Williamstown, Mass., and his medical degree from Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Providence, R.I. He went on to complete his internal medicine residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, Mass., and his cardiovascular disease fellowship at Boston Medical Center Brighton, where he also served as Chief Fellow.

He is certified in cardiovascular disease, adult echocardiography, nuclear cardiology and internal medicine. In addition, he has extensive experience in medical research and has authored or co-authored numerous posters, presentations, journal articles and book chapters.

When not practicing medicine, Dr. Dutta enjoys hiking, being outdoors, history, and English literature.

Dr. Dutta will have outpatient clinic hours at Oconee Heart and Vascular Center’s main office, located near Epps Bridge Crossing in The Exchange office park at 2470 Daniells Bridge Road, Building 200, Suite 251, Athens. He is now accepting new patient appointments. Please note that some insurance plans require a physician referral. As part of St. Mary's Medical Group, OHVC accepts most major insurance plans and Medicare. You can make a new patient appointment by calling (706) 389-3440.
