A little Athens Potluck is a Guaranteed Good Time
ATHENS, GA – September 16, 2024— As anticipation builds for the grand opening of Akins Ford Arena at the end of 2024, the venue is set to pay tribute to Athens’ legendary music scene through a captivating integration of Jason Thrasher’s acclaimed Athens Potluck. Visitors will experience the city’s rich musical heritage firsthand as images from Thrasher’s work are featured throughout the arena.
Athens Potluck dives into a behind-the-scenes look with 33 different artists throughout Athens and has been recognized by Garden and Gun Magazine. This exciting addition is just one of the many attractions designed to entertain and educate visitors inside Athens’ newest venue.
“I feel that this book is just a story of Athens. It’s not the whole story. There could have been a thousand other versions of this,” said Jason Thrasher, Athens Potluck photographer. “I’m very lucky that I was in the right place and in the right mindset to capture this when I did. I love Athens and the creative spirit of this place.”
The Classic Center Authority and the University of Georgia Libraries have been collaborating with Terence Healy from HealyKohler Design, a nationally recognized firm specializing in museum experiences, to design the arena’s theme around music.
“From bringing in national touring acts, highlighting local and state artists through the Georgia Music Collections, to the interior design and naming of the Athens Rock Lobsters, Akins Ford Arena will elevate the Athens music scene,” said Paul Cramer, President/CEO of The Classic Center. “The interior design will look and feel all about music. We are honored to work with Jason Thrasher and showcase his work throughout the arena. The images are fun, artsy, and all about Athens, bringing the perfect touch to this new venue.”
· An immersive experience into Athens Potluck is being presented in a five-room showcase at the University of Georgia Special Collections Library, available until the end of the year. A Grit Potluck will take place on September 21, 2024, at 7:00 p.m., at the 40 Watt Club to celebrate the exhibition, and Thrasher will be releasing a new book, Murmur Trestle.
· Athens is home to the B-52s, Widespread Panic, R.E.M., and many more wonderful bands, and any given weekend in Athens, you will find live music. The collection, along with photos from Athens Potluck being housed in the new arena, creates a wonderful opportunity to build the music scene within the community.
