About the Position:

We are looking for a detail-oriented, experienced Senior Accountant to manage day-to-day accounting & finance operations. In this role, you’ll ensure accuracy, compliance, smooth month-end closes, and help provide clean financials to the CFO to enable strategic decision-making.

This role is responsible for driving accurate reporting and compliance, refining financial processes, managing client invoicing, and processing payroll. This team member will need to have a deep understanding of GAAP, financial operations, and how accounting supports broader business objectives and decision-making.

This is a full-time position based in our Athens office. This role is hybrid, with the expectation of at least three days per week in the office.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Accounts Payable & Receivable
    • Process, code, and enter vendor invoices; ensure timely vendor payments.
    • Manage client invoicing, send out invoices per contract/project milestones.
    • Post payments, match AR, resolve unapplied or misapplied payments.
    • Perform AR aging, follow up on overdue invoices.
  • General Ledger & Month-End / Year-End Close
    • Maintain chart of accounts; control and record all journal entries (accruals, prepaids, depreciation, payroll entries).
    • Reconcile all balance sheet accounts monthly (bank statements, credit cards, loans, intercompany).
    • Prepare trial balance; adjust and correct discrepancies.
    • Maintain fixed asset register; handle capitalization and depreciation schedules.
  • Payroll & Employee Expenses
    • Coordinate payroll process and ensure correct entries.
    • Reconcile payroll liabilities, benefits, PTO, etc.
    • Process employee expense reports promptly; verify policy compliance.
  • Financial Reporting & Compliance
    • Generate monthly financial statements: Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow summary.
    • Assist CFO with monthly variance analysis (budget vs. actual).
    • Prepare supporting schedules and reconciliations for tax filings & audits.
    • Ensure compliance with accounting standards (GAAP) and relevant federal/state regulations.
  • Cash Management & Banking
    • Monitor bank accounts daily; reconcile bank statements.
  • Systems, Processes & Controls
    • Maintain accounting software (Quickbooks Online); ensure backups and data integrity.
    • Document accounting policies & procedures; enforce internal controls.
    • Identify inefficiencies; suggest automation or process improvements.
  • Support CFO / Strategic Work
    • Provide data and support for budgeting / forecasting.
    • Assist with financial modeling as requested.
    • Help implement metrics / KPIs (e.g. billable utilization, client profitability).

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. 
  • CPA not required but preferred
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills

Skills + Experience:

  • At least 3-5 years of accounting experience, with senior-level or supervisory responsibilities.
  • Experience in agencies, professional services, marketing / PR a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, financial statements.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online, and Excel (pivot tables, formulas, data analysis). Experience with expense/time tracking and project accounting systems is helpful.

What Success Looks Like (First 6-12 Months):

  • Clean, accurate month-end closes within a defined schedule (e.g. within 5 business days).
  • AR aging reduced; receivables collected on time.
  • Vendor billings and payables are well managed and timely.
  • Reliable financial statements enabling CFO/leadership to make informed decisions; budgeting & forecasting data is trustworthy.
  • Improvements in processes/controls, reduced manual work, fewer errors.
