More about Chanda:
As the Founder and Director of DIVAS Who Win Freedom Center, Chanda has devoted herself to standing up for the voiceless and defending women who have experienced trauma. Because of her personal experience with the sex trade, domestic violence, and trauma, she feels deeply responsible for fighting on behalf of others who have gone through such devastating experiences, making herself an example of someone who has picked herself up from the pain and the anguish and found a way not only to move forward but to achieve even greater heights of success. Driven by the struggles that she has experienced and the challenges that she has overcome, she is working steadfastly day in and day out to make a difference for others.
Her experience with human trafficking began shortly before her child’s 18th birthday. She had worried to no end about all the most terrible possibilities, desperate to find out where her child could be. When she did find out, it was a bittersweet moment because although her child was safe, none of their lives would ever be the same again. Their paths had become intertwined with those of a group of traffickers, evildoers who had acted without any regard for the pure, innocent life that they had held in captivity.
When the torment was over, her child back in her harms, Chanda understood that their journey to true healing would be long. They would need to work together, leaning on community and each other. It was also a time, that the resiliency of their shared experience sparked within, a determination to empower their neighbors, friends, and community about sex trafficking specifically, so that other moms, dads, uncles, grandparents would be spared of the trauma they endured. Ms. Santana would leverage the multiplicity of her own lived experience to ignite hope and empower vulnerable populations throughout Northeast Georgia. As a woman in long-term recovery, Chanda has lived fourteen years substance-free, freeing herself from a different sort of captivity – the captivity of numbness. Also, a survivor of sexual trauma, domestic violence, and divorce, she has seen life’s most dizzying blows up close and lived to tell the tales.
Reaching out into the world, Chanda speaks openly about her tribulations and triumphs. She has written extensively about her real-life experiences, in addition to making presentations about the atrocities of domestic minor sex trafficking and the disease of addiction. She believes fully in the power of healing and recovery within community and building a constituency of educated and empowered stakeholders to carry the message of hope and shed awareness around the pandemic of child trafficking.
A social entrepreneur, Chanda Santana operates DIVAS Who Win Freedom Center as a Georgia-registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Chanda is also a Certified Addiction Empowerment Specialist (CARES) and has dedicated her life’s work in the field of human trafficking and addiction for 13 plus years. She directs all strategy at the non-profit and empowering and helping others, focusing all her public engagement efforts on the message that she knows she has to share – a message of resilience, hope and empowerment.
