DESCRIPTION:Local author and retired UGA professor Dr. Ron Balthazor will present a free reading and author talk about his collection of essays\, A Book of Seasons\, on Sunday\, July 19th from 3-5 p.m at the Historic Athens Welcome Center. Published by Mercer University Press\, the book is composed of reflections\, stories\, meditations\, and poetry inspired by the seasons and deeply influenced by transcendental writers such as Henry David Thoreau\, Aldo Leopold\, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. "We invited Dr. Balthazor to share these stories because they remind us to pause and connect our surroundings\, especially nature\, which can be challenging in the modern world\," says Libba Beaucham\, Guest Services Coordinator at the Welcome Center. The Welcome Center is located within the c. 1820 Church-Waddel-Brumby House\, believed to be the oldest surviving house in Athens. The author talk and reading will take place in the house museum's formal parlor which has a view of a parterre garden cared for by the Piedmont Gardeners. The free event will begin at 3:00 p.m. with light refreshments and the opportunity for guests to tour the Church-Waddel-Brumby House. Readings and an author talk will take place at 3:30 p.m. and the event will conclude at 5:00 p.m. Dr. Balthazor will sign copies of A Book of Seasons available for purchase at the event. The Welcome Center is located at 280 E. Dougherty Street in Athens\, Georgia. There is a small parking lot with handicap spaces available. Street parking is also available nearby.
